250 Video Tapes Later

Posted in Uncategorized at 12:00 am by dgcombs

Since I’ve got a little extra time on my hands, I decided to go through the dark and dusty video tape shelves and see what we’ve got. The basic idea was to decide which ones we want to transfer to DVD, which ones we should just buy on DVD and which ones we could just toss in the dumpster and never ever miss.First, I had to count them: 250. Then I decided to log each of them (by number) into a -list- spreadsheet so we could look at each one and make an intelligent decision. A few interesting tidbits fell out. We have three copies of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. We have two copies of Amistad. We have two copies of Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. Some easy decisions here.I found one tape that says “”Part II of xxx continued on the TDK tape.”” There must be 15 TDK tapes. We taped the PBS Show Mystery (Sherlock Holmes, Rumpole of the Bailey, Peter Whimsey, Hetty Wainthrope, Miss Marple and Poirot). We taped the PBS show Masterpiece Theater with the likes of Martin Chuzzlewit and David Copperfield. We taped PBS Nova with historical information about the Maya, China and others. And there are two copies of Nova about G.K. Chesterton. So now how do we take the 185 or so tapes we want and convert them without spending six hours or more per tape? Why, that’s about six months of working 6-8 hours a day!Or maybe should I just hustle down to Best Buy and get a brand new VHS tape player and put it in the attic along with the tapes we want to save…
